Canada backcountry skiing provides an opportunity to explore the remote wilderness mountains and valleys with only nature surrounding you. There is no nearby lodge, ski lifts, warming huts... it is just you and nature exploring on skies.
There are various levels of Canada backcountry skiing accessed by an assortment of transportation modes. The main types of backcountry skiing in Canada include heli skiing, cat skiing, telemark skiing and ski mountaineering.
Heli skiing involves helicopters flying skiers to high elevation mountain slopes for downhill powder runs. Cat skiing involves large snowcats following snow covered gravel roads to ski destinations. Ski mountaineering involves, in some cases, self propelled transportation (snowshoes, telemark skiing) to reach backcountry ski destinations. Telemark skiing (also known as free heel skiing) is a form of skiing using the Telemark turn.
Throughout the Canadian backcountry ski regions there are various operators who provide heli skiing, cat skiing and ski mountaineering adventures. Many provide day trips and some offer up multi-day adventures.
Services and amenities vary per trip over-night plan. Most operators provide lessons, equipment, meals, transportation and preparation for multi day skiing adventures. Operators are also obligated to check the weather conditions, avalanche reports and ski routes.
Accommodations include full service lodges, self contained cottages and remote wilderness cabins. Located in some regions of Canada in the deep backcountry regions are alpine huts which are basic lodgings (warming huts) for skiers provided and managed by local alpine clubs.
Backcountry skiing, heli skiing and cat skiing is popular in the mountain ranges of British Columbia and Alberta including the Coast Mountains, Interior Mountains and throughout the Rocky Mountains.
Ontario and Quebec have areas in the province which provide backcountry ski adventures. And there are also wilderness lodges providing ski mountaineering adventures in the Yukon Territory of Canada.
