Waterfalls and Climbing in Canmore

Canmore here I come!  My legs were feeling great this morning after the big day of hiking and researching. I was raring to go again. Energizer bunny like.

The day was pegged for researching closer to home base today. I wanted to check out Grassi Lakes, Quarry Lake, Policemans Creek, Cougar Creek and what ever else I ran into that looked interesting while in Canmore.

Grassi Lakes was the first hike that was planned for the day. It is a 4 kilometre loop hike with some community and lake views leading to a waterfall, a couple of small ponds and some towering rock cliffs.

The trail has an easy route and a hard route. The easy route follows a gravel like road.  The hard route follows a single track trail with tree roots, mud, run off creeks and boulders. My kind of route!

The waterfall was a towering slide created by reservoir lakes and dams. One can see it from the trailhead. Right near the waterfall are a cool set of rock work steps leading up the cliff wall.  It was a nice touch.  The bonus on this adventure did not unfold until I hit the cliffs.

At the rock cliffs over looking the two small ponds are some massive rock walls. And to my surprise there were about 8 people climbing. No one mentioned climbing here. It is amazing to watch rock climbers. So, realizing my luck,  I did take a spot on the nearby bench and watched for awhile.

Two Great Minds

Soon I had to move onto Quarry Lake and then I took a stroll down the main community walkway named Policeman’s Creek. It is a gravel and boardwalk path in town connecting neighborhoods. Many use it for biking, jogging and hiking. I got a kick out of the big bald head at the trailhead.

The day ended in rain. It started to blow and a storm was moving in. All this quickly developing news as I was about to go hike the Cougar Creek Trail. Sitting in my jeep at the trailhead with rain pounding dents in my hood, I decided Cougar Creek will have to wait for our next visit to Canmore.

Be well. Be active!!

Cheers.
