Canada rock climbing (cragging) is an opportunity to scale some of North America's best climbing routes. The mountain ranges in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and the Yukon Territory are the most visited rock climbing destinations in Canada.
British Columbia and Alberta being the most popular and world renown rock climbing destinations. In many Western Canada rock climbing communities there are rock shops, climbing gyms, guides and tours providing lessons and equipment rentals.
Canada rock climbing destinations vary in ease of access. There are rock climbing destinations which are located at the end of hiking trails, gravel access roads and on the side of highways. The harder to reach climbing destinations require a floatplane, a boat, ATV or a kayak to access.
Difficulty of climbs also varies per Canada rock climbing destination. Some mountain climbing walls see little use with little development and no supervision. Obviously these routes are for the experienced free climber.
For the inexperienced climber there are rock climbing centres in the bigger communities. Some of the centres are indoor and some are outdoor. All provide instruction and equipment rental and guides. Indoor centres provide a safe environment to learn the basics of climbing with developed climbing routes and plastic holds.
Climbing clubs and climbing gyms are a good source for information on the location of the more challenging climbing routes.
There are various types of climbing techniques including top roping, indoor climbing, free climbing, sport climbing, bouldering, speed climbing and multi pitch climbing. A climbing guide or gym are a good source for learning the various cragging techniques.
Ice climbing is a winter adventure also enjoyed in Canada. During the colder winter months the waterfalls of Canada, located at the higher elevations, freeze up. These frozen climbing walls attract climbers from all around the world.
